2008 Mercury Mountaineer- Car Reviews

The 2008 Mercury Mountaineer is a mid sized 4-door luxury SUV. It is designed to accommodate up to 7 passengers. The 2008 Mountaineer is a carryover from 2007 and it comes in six trims ranging from the 4X2 Base 4.0L to the AWD Premier 4.6L. The latest models come with a host of functional and cosmetic updates that take this slightly more-upscale version of the Ford Explorer to a much higher level of performance and sophistication. While the basic look remains intact, the new models are more refined with some minor changes.

The Mercury Mountaineer has always been a favorite among mid size SUV users. At its debut, it provided good space option for medium-size families, comfortable ride handling, high performance and powerful off-road capability. These qualities have held steady through two generations and it is passed on to the third generation. During its debut, Mountaineer resembled the Ford Explorer from mechanical point of view and also shares its truck like chassis construction. But eventually, it has got some more standard amenities, softer suspension tuning and all-wheel drive.

The latest 2008 Mercury Mountaineer comes with five or seven passenger seating options. Upon introduction, the 4X2 Base 4.0L is equipped with a standard 4.0-liter, V6, 210-horsepower engine and a standard 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. The AWD Premier 4.6L has a standard 4.6-liter, V8, 292-horsepower engine along with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Both the V6 and V8 can be ordered with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive. The latter is able to react immediately to changing road and weather conditions to maintain maximum traction. The 2008 Mercury Mountaineer is divided into two trim levels: Base and Premier. Both the Base and Premier has much standard equipment like leather upholstery, power seats and dual-zone climate control. Latest rear entertainment system and a navigation system are also available.

For safety there is Ford’s AdvanceTrak stability-control system with Roll Stability Control and standard side curtain airbags that provide added road-handling control, especially around sharp curves. It employs a gyroscope that detects when a rollover is likely to take place, engaging the brakes and controlling engine power, so as to bring the vehicle back under control.

The Mercury Mountaineer offers a smooth and composed ride and respectable handling. The independent rear suspension that comes with all the trims is responsible for this comfortable ride. The Mercury Mountaineer is the roomiest of all mid sized SUVs. It offers a comfortable and smooth ride on its 17 inch wheels and tires along with the towing capability of a truck-based SUV. The overall accommodations of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer offer a lot of utility.

Not only this, there is the uniquely restyled interior features made of high quality materials and more intuitive switchgear. The new dashboard has round air vents and a revised analog gauge cluster. The interior door latches are exclusively designed. The third row is standard on the Luxury and Premier versions, but buyers also have the option to delete the third row if it is not needed. Power-folding capability for the third row is optional on the Luxury and included with the Premier. The Mercury Mountaineer has average reliability. Earlier models have received five out of five stars on the National Highway Safety Administration's front and side crash tests and three out of five stars on the rollover test.

So, one can see that the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer will definitely follow the steps of its predecessors and will soon become one of the best selling vehicles of this current generation.
